Marine Corps Child and Youth Programs (CYP) deliver exceptional opportunities that empower military connected youth ages 13-18 to grow, lead, and thrive. Through dynamic experiences in leadership development, workforce readiness, health and wellness, and community engagement, CYP helps teens build a strong foundation for lifelong success.
One of the most distinguished opportunities available to teens is the National Military Youth of the Year (NMYOY) scholarship program—an initiative made through a valued partnership between CYP and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA).
This prestigious competition honors outstanding military-connected teens worldwide who exemplify academic excellence, strong character, leadership, public speaking skills, and a clear vision for the future.
Teens advance through installation- and region-level competitions to represent their service at the national level, culminating in the NMYOY celebration on August 7 at the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C. This year’s winner, Jacob R., of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia, will serve as the military youth spokesperson for BGCA, using their platform to share their voice and inspire audiences nationwide.
CYP installations play a vital role in preparing and supporting NMYOY applicants by connecting teens to enriching community-based experiences. A key requirement of the competition is a strong commitment to volunteerism.
Beyond meeting application criteria, volunteering provides teens with real-world experience, builds essential life and career skills, and fosters lasting community connections.
For those ready to serve and lead, the Volunteer Program offers a wide array of service opportunities to match teens’ interests and availability. Teens can connect with their installation volunteer coordinator to get started and discover meaningful ways to make an impact.
As military youth begin exploring their career goals, CYP and the Family Member Employment Assistance Program (FMEAP) are ready to assist. From resume building to career planning, these resources ensure that volunteer work and personal growth translate into professional opportunities.
The National Military Youth of the Year scholarship program is more than a competition. It’s a celebration of service, leadership, and the unstoppable spirit of military-connected teens.
